How do I Disable Onstar?

  • You may ask why you would want to do this. Well, if you no longer subscribe to onstar nor do you plan to in the near future, why have it running so that Onstar can know where you are.

Per Onstar's Official Terms and Conditions:
THE INFORMATION WE GET FROM YOUR CAR INCLUDES THINGS SUCH AS DATA ABOUT ITS OPERATION, ABOUT YOUR USE OF OnStar SERVICES, ABOUT WHERE YOUR CAR IS JUST BEFORE AND DURING REQUESTS FOR OnStar SERVICE IN YOUR CAR, AND (DEPENDING ON YOUR OnStar Equipment) DATA ABOUT ACCIDENTS INVOLVING YOUR CAR (for example, the direction from which your car was hit).
You agree that we can, subject to applicable law, use any of this information to: (a) provide OnStar services to you or your Car (including sharing that information with roadside assistance providers, emergency service providers, or others, as needed); (b) check or maintain your OnStar Equipment; (c) provide information to the maker of your Car about the Car's performance and to enable the maker of your Car to comply with law; (d) help you or managers of fleets of Cars (if your Car is part of a fleet) to maintain the Car; (e) evaluate and improve our service; (f) enforce this agreement with you or others; (g) prevent fraud or misuse of OnStar service; (h) comply with legal requirements, valid court orders and exigent circumstances; (i) protect the rights, property, or safety of you or others; (j) offer you new or additional products or services; or (k) perform market research.

NOTE: The part that gets me in the above is the "perform market research" part.. You have basically agreed to let me track you for market research purposes...

Please note that by disabling the onstar module, your "voice memo" feature and voice navigation (for standard CTS owners) will no longer work.

So, to disable the VCIM (vehicle communication and information module-I think that is the acronym):
  • Open Trunk
  • Remove "tub Cover" Already removed in picture

  • Remove trunk "sill plate" by unscrewing the four rear most cargo net holders

  • Pull UP on sill plate to remove it and set it aside.

  • Remove right side cargo net holders as well.

  • Grab the front of the right side pane and gently pull slightly toward the front of the car (so the panel clears the stud) (see figure) and then pull gently toward the middle of the car.
Note, you do NOT need to completely remove the panel, you only need to move it to get access to the VCIM

  • There are 3 connectors attached to the Onstar module located at the front of the module aiming down. Remove these 3 connectors.

  • Once disconnected, push the side trim panel back into place.
  • Slide the sill plate back into the car making sure to line it up with the snap holes on the bottom side of the panel
  • Carefully rescrew the Black "cargo net holders" back into place

Celebrate the fact that big brother cannot track you down.
